O inicio foi para mim um pouco dificil de compreender, visto que é o primeiro que leio mas depois cheguei lá. Sei que o autor já reveu esta história mas como foi adquirido através de troca no winkingbooks desconheço se é a versão atualizada ou não. Resume-se à procura de um homem, Man in Black, pelo Gunslinger, num mundo utópico mas muito semelhante ao nosso. De facto parece ser o nosso futuro, pois existem referências a este mundo no passado semelhantes a actualidade que nós conhecemos.
Roland Deschain of Gilead é filho de Steven, Gunslinger, campeão Branco, descendente da linha de Artur Eld (talvez seja o Rei Artur e os cavaleiros da távola redonda), perseguidor do Man in Black e procurador da Torre Negra.
Tudo se desenrola para que exista o confronto final entre os dois homens.

Book I
In The Gunslinger (originally published in 1982), King introduces his most enigmatic hero, Roland Deschain of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger. Pursuing the man in black, an evil being who can bring the dead back to life, Roland is a good man who seems to leave nothing but death in his wake.
This new edition of The Gunslinger has been revised and expanded throughout by King, with new story material, in addition to a new introduction and foreword. It also includes four full-color illustrations in the hardcover and trade paperback formats.
